We tried to have our regular MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Class Chat today but things went haywire part of the way into it so it was canceled. Following is the log that accumulated while class was in session.

David Perry, a longtime headhunter, says you're wasting your time if you're looking for job postings online. And he should know: he's often the guy on the other side helping companies lure new talent. Perry, who's based in Ottawa, says that in the last 22 years he has accomplished 996 searches totaling $172 million in salary. And the bottom line in today's economy, he says, is you have to tap the "hidden job market."

I just noticed on my Hoovers account when I do a company look-up there's now a "LinkedIn Connections" box (coincidentally is non-copyable) that links you to employee profiles (that I am "connected" with) at the company being researched. Is this new? What is it? Some kind of partnership between Hoovers and LI?

Unemployment over 50%?
I saw it stated yesterday in a training circular that unemployment in recruiting was around 50%! Is this your experience? Tell us what's happening in your world.
I asked the question above last week in the Sourcers Unleashed Yahoo group and was kind of surprised to see the string pop to life. I suppose I should't have been. Here's what people said:
That and maybe more for Contract Recruiters out of…

Rita Ashley, Job Search Coaching for $100,000+ Job Seekers, is asking, over on LinkedIn:
Why do you dislike recruiters? So many people commented on a thread about recruiters with recruiter-bashing, I feel compelled to learn more. I hope you will read this link. Would you contribute your own reasons? Maybe even mention some good experiences. Let's give recruiters a chance to respond.

Kevin Stakelum, Staffing Manager at Microsoft, is asking, over on LinkedIn:
How do you measure the productivity/effectiveness of sourcers?
I would love to hear from those of you that have exposure/experience in a "split" recruiting model (where you have some recruiters owning client contact and others who specialize in the sourcing function).
1) Did the "sourcers" qualify and speak to candidates directly and were they expected to perform… Continue

Last night I went to LinkedIn to accept the accumulated hundred or so Invitations I had received over last coupla' weeks and at first it appeared that LI had removed the "bulk accept" capability for invitations at the site. With some advice from our very own
Boolean BlackBelt Glen Cathey I was able to discover that it had not been removed entirely - only made much harder to find! The trick is to accept one…

I recently came across this post on one of the boards:
I was recently asked by a firm to do a Name Generation project for them. I've never done just Name Gen - as I usually do Research and Candidate Sourcing. I have no idea how much $$ to charge for just Name Gen. Would appreciate any suggestions... thanks.
Because the question is impossible to answer without knowing what is expected in the deliverables I asked:

ERE has been so kind as to publish one of my how-to's:
Many sourcing expeditions are doomed to failure because the sourcer “assumes” they have found what the customer wants. The fact is, in these instances, the sourcer hasn’t asked enough questions of the customer on the front end of the process to know what the customer wants. This is because they do not possess the depth of experience in sourcing to know what questions to… Continue

Bob Hatcher asks, here on MM and over on RBC:
Our recruiting company is discussing outsourcing our name gathering function.
Can anyone tell me how outsourcers charge for their services?
I have read that some services charge by the hour...regardless of the results.
The names that we need sourcing are at the "Director" or "VP" level.
