John Sumser Says Sourcing Is Almost Dead!

Contemporary sourcing is a dead-end occupation with little in the way of transferrable skills. Next generation recruiting is about relating intimately, not about mutual discovery. It's about fidelity and long term value exchange, not one night stands. It's about data that updates itself because the relationship is constantly working. Finding each other? Easy. Building an enduring relationship? Hard.

Firestorm!

Brandon, Your arguments regarding American workers needing protection seem illogical and demeaning. If American workers are the best and brightest, why would they need protection from foreign workers for opportunities in their own country?

Today's Class - Sourcing Risks and Rates

Yesterday I received a call from a woman who asked me what the "going rates" were these days on contingent* search. I asked her specifically what was she being asked to do. She told me she was being asked to:

Phone-source security clearanced workers

Contact them and present the opportunity

Profile them and get their resumes if she could

Set up a "second call" with the "recruiter" who would then "take over" and "close" the… Continue

Gov't says 'mass layoffs' soared in January

Employers took a large ax to their payrolls in January, the government said Wednesday, and the cuts are likely to get worse over the next few months.

The Labor Department reported that mass layoffs, or job cuts of 50 or more by a single employer, increased to 2,227 in January, up almost 50 percent from the same month last year. More than 235,000 workers were fired in… Continue

“...something worthy to be remembered.”

Watching President Obama's speech to the nation last night (February 24, 2009) I was struck by his many lyricisms but this one stood out for me as he closed his address with an exhortation: '...this was the time when we performed, in the words that are carved into this very chamber, 'something worthy to be remembered.'”

The phrase stayed with me… Continue

Tuesday Feb 24 Class Discussion: Looking for Junior-level candidates

Maureen: I have a question for you. I am looking for Field Sales candidates within Germany who are relatively junior (3-4 years) and within salary constraints. However, when we do name generation, most of the candidates that we are getting are from all levels. In that collation process, we are not able to filter the candidates. I got a person who's doing field sales with 15 years of experience and way outside my budget. At the end of the day - I got… Continue

New Search Technology

One day last summer, Google’s search engine trundled quietly past a milestone. It added the one trillionth address to the list of Web pages it knows about. But as impossibly big as that number may seem, it represents only a fraction of the entire Web. Beyond those trillion pages lies an even vaster Web of hidden data: financial information, shopping catalogs, flight schedules,… Continue

More Customers Give Up the Cellphone Contract

Maybe Tony Soprano was onto something. As the lead mobster in the HBO series “The Sopranos,” he and his crew often turned to prepaid cellphones, presumably to avoid wiretaps. A prepaid phone is purchased at a T-Mobile store in Queens. Prepaid phone sales rose 13 percent in North America last year. But now these pay-as-you-go phones are winning over fans for different… Continue

Good morning sourcers - Today (Thurs, Feb 19) is MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Class chat - and in it we're going to talk about "people skills". This idea was prompted by a conversation I had this morning over on RBC with "Don".
