Does anyone have any tricks on how to find email addresses for companies? For example, I'm searching for someone at Pepsi Bottling Group.

I know that when I worked for Bank of America our emails were: [e-mail].

I'm not sure you gave us enough info to go on -- are there regional PBGs? For some reason I think there may be - which one do you want to reach?

Acting upon your info, if you do a google search on "Pepsi Bottling Group" the first hit that comes up appears to be the home site, complete with a "Contact Us" invitation - clicking on it I see several email addresses listed:

Checking further, I click on Press Releases and look at their last release: June 8: The Pepsi Bottling Group To Acquire Texas Bottler - At the top of that page are two more @pepsi.com addresses that have first name DOT last name before the @symbol...

Digging a little further I discover that Pepsi Bottling Group is one of two of PepsiCo's largest bottlers, as described in this May 4 Reuters posting:

The Pepsi Bottling Group said on Monday its board had rejected a proposal by PepsiCo to buy the remaining stake in the bottler, citing the offer as “grossly inadequate.” PepsiCo offered $6 billion to buy the remaining stakes in its two largest bottlers, the Pepsi Bottling Group and PepsiAmericas, in an attempt to cut costs and secure more control of its distribution.

I found it interesting that one of Pepsi's bottlers owned the simple @pepsi.com domain. I wonder who was asleep at the wheel at PepsiCo when these things screamed out to be claimed?

The above is more like fact checking - once you establish what you're after, maybe this string helps? Or this string? Maybe even this one? And then, there's always advice like this.

I can tell you this, doing the early research directly AT the company like I did above took a lot less time than looking for info on how to do it! I'd bet money it's first nameDOTlast [e-mail]

I use Jigsaw and Linkedin alot when I need to find people's email addresses.. Jigsaw works the best. It is a free site to join (you just have to load it with points). It is real easy to do this. Just add your friends to the site and you get points. Put in the company's name you are looking for and a directory of people will come up. If your contact is not on the list it will show you other people's emails so you can figure out what the email address is.

One thing I do once I *think* I have the right email combination is to use a site like www.mailtester.com to double check for valid email address! Sometimes, I'll just try several combinations there also just until I get one that works!

After you determine the domain name (the part that goes after the @ sign) typically from company website/press release etc. just like Maureen suggested. But if you don't find the full format from an Investor or PR or press release page then use these strings in Google. Replace companyname.com with your specific target's domain format.

(1) mailto=*=@companyname.com
(2) "email * * companyname.com"

This will inevitably retrieve people emails and you can figure out the format. Remember some companies may not have consistent email formats but this helps for the most part!

If you find that email IDs require a middle initial, then you have to just Google for official press releases, bio/CVs, look up on Hoovers/Zoom OR then run the first and last name and geography on what I call my locator sites (address/phone look up sites). This one shows middle initials for the most part www.intelius.com. If also helps to compile a list of typical email formats & domains you have found in excel as a quick goto reference. Hope this helps!

A variation is to go to Google Finance (google.com/finance) for the company in question (assuming it isn't private) and click on 'investor relations' (this is a very specific link at the bottom of the page after you enter the name of the company). I like this because it always goes to the press releases AND just above that section I also get the names of other companies in the same general vertical (for sourcing).

Then click a press/news release or two. Just go to the bottom and more often than not there is a name, phone & email. Not foolproof, however. Note: These folks are not always at the corporate office, but should get you started.

Generally, you should be able to gt the domain name of the company through a simple Google search. For instance, Google "bank of america" to find its website. Sometimes, the company uses a different domain for its extranet (public website) and a different domain for email, etc. You may need to do some more searching to get the correct email domain. Another way to identify the email domain is to use www.jigsaw.com to get the contact info (including email address) of a coworker at the company. There's always a chance that your target may actually be in JigSaw, but even if s/he's not, JigSaw is a great place to start.

Once you know the domain, I would then preface the domain with an asterisk (*) and the commercial a symbol (@). For instance, I'd search on *@bankofamerica.com to see the email naming convention for that company. The asterisk serves as a wildcard operator in Google search. That means your search will return results beginning with anything and ending with @bankofamerica.com.

Many people this this way but it's not true. * serves as a wildcard on some databases but it doesn't on Google. On Google, * means one word (sometimes a few words). It does not mean part of a word. The symbol @ is ignored by Google along with most other special symbols. So searching for *@company.com is exactly the same as searching for company.com and is not the best way to search for email addresses. A string like "email * * company.com" is more likely to find email addresses.
